G Love & Special Sauce, Kristy Lee

When: Sun., Jan. 15, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $20-25

Hard to believe, but Philadelphia's G. Love & Special Sauce have been purveying funky, loose-limbed rap blues mash-ups to the college crowd for nearly two decades. Frontman and namesake Garrett Dunton has started growing up as he approaches 40; last year's Fixin' To Die, produced by the Avett Brothers, replaced the references to blunts and booty with more mature originals and covers of Paul Simon, Velvet Underground and traditional blues. Alabama singer-songwriter Kristy Lee may be a bit folkish, but her soulful pipes and swampy slide guitar playing add a dose of the blues. —Spencer Griffith
