G Love & Special Sauce, Apache Relay

When: Fri., March 4, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $20-25

G. Love's 14th album, Fixin' to Die, finds the Philadelphian largely losing the sophomoric lyrics and goofy rhymes of his loose, breezy rap style. Recorded at Asheville's Echo Mountain Studio with contributions and production from Scott and Seth Avett, Fixin' predictably focuses more on folk and country blues. The disc mixes G. Love originals—this time, thankfully devoid of weed anthems and booty calls—with traditional blues numbers and covers of Paul Simon and the Velvet Underground, all executed surprisingly well. He's still plenty easygoing, but banjos and boot stompin'—along with G. Love's trademark harmonica solos—make these tunes feel almost at home on back porches or in juke joints. Opening act the Apache Relay's polished hybrid of newgrass and indie rock explodes into magnificent moments of orchestral splendor on record; on stage, it maintains an earnest, spirited charm. —Spencer Griffith
