Future Islands, Wye Oak

When: Wed., March 5, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $16-18

Baltimore-via-Greenville trio Future Islands make each successive trip to the Triangle feel like another triumphant return. The latest level of their sustained rise through the indie ranks has seen them signing to the long-running, well-respected label 4AD, which will release their fourth LP, Singles, on March 25.

While Future Islands has called Baltimore home for years, much of Singles was born in a Wayne County hunting cabin. Singles brims with references to tall grass and other rural signifiers, all cast in warm tones and translated through a postmodern, synth-driven dance-pop filter: mournful hooks seem aimed squarely into the backwoods. Wednesday's show in Saxapahaw—just another remote Alamance County mill town before retro-modern condos and a world-class music venue lent it a higher profile—seems entirely appropriate, then; once again, a small Southern hamlet dispatching Future Islands to the rest of the world. With Wye Oak and Ed Schrader's Music Beat. —Corbie Hill
