Fucked Up, Wavves

When: Tue., Sept. 27, 9:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $16

David Comes to Life, the sprawling and romantic political punk opera released by Canadian hardcore crew Fucked Up earlier this year, pushed the long-brainy band to a new set of listeners who treated the album like surprising new evidence that hardcore could be smart. That's a condescending conclusion, of course, especially in light of Fucked Up's wildly restless and adventurous discography. It's a perilous conclusion, too, because it runs the risk of making people think of punk rock in the same academic manner as free jazz or doom metal—stuff to be stared at and not danced or moshed to. Go see Fucked Up live: Even with a rock opera, a talk show and a big Matador contract to his name, Damian Abraham is still one of the hardest-working big men in rock music. He treats his audiences like a theme park, hugging and lifting and generally overjoying his fans as he marauds through a crowd while barking his themes. There are very few better reasons to leave the house than a live visit from Fucked Up. Wavves co-headlines.—Grayson Currin
