Frontier Ruckus

When: Sat., Jan. 29, 8:30 p.m. 2011
Price: $8-10
Although Frontier Ruckus doesn't burn as many barns as its name might suggest, the Lansing, Mich., quintet fits right into the Ramseur Records stable of neo-Americana acts, twisting strands of orchestral indie rock around Matthew Milia's intensely lyrical tales. Milia's voice falls somewhere between that of labelmate Sam Quinn and Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum. A Dylanesque writer, he weaves incredible detail into esoteric accounts—"minutia-obsessed memorialism," according to the band. His bandmates respect the songwriting as the star of the show, softly accenting with a host of subtle, unexpected additions such as horns, melodica and saw. —Spencer Griffith
