"Free Within Ourselves" Photo Exhibit & Event

When: Sat., Nov. 6, 6 p.m. 2010
Price: $5-8

Bull City Forward—Photographer Jose Galvez is the guest speaker at this exhibit announcing the winner of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice's photo contest. Galvez has spent his entire professional career documenting the lives of Latinos in the United States. In 1984, he and colleagues at the Los Angeles Times became the first Mexican-Americans to win the Pulitzer Prize, for an in-depth series on the Latino experience in Southern California.

Galvez grew up in Tucson, Ariz., and, according to his website, his introduction to the newspaper business came at age 10, when he set up a shoe shine box in the offices of the Arizona Daily Star. He later became a staff photographer there, during which time he pursued his passion of representing everyday life in the Mexican-American barrios where he grew up. He moved to North Carolina in 2004 to chronicle the wave of Hispanic immigration that's remaking the South, as in his photo exhibit on the chicanos of Norte Carolina, Al Norte al "Norte."

This fundraising event runs 6–9 p.m.; tickets are $5–$8. —Marc Maximov
