When: Thu., Sept. 3, 10 p.m. 2015
Price: $5
The hip-hop blog Super Empty recently published an essay with the headline declaring “Let’s Be Honest: The Carolina Music Awards For Hip Hop is Bullshit.” It calls the CMAs “a sham,” “a complete disaster” and accuses it of taking advantage of artists. Two of tonight’s acts—N.C. rap crew Free The Optimus and Durham’s Defacto Thezpian—nabbed awards at this year’s ceremonies and then got caught in the crossfire of being grateful recipients while siding with larger public opinion about the CMA’s dubious attempts. The takeaway, then? Our support and attendance are more important than a trophy. —Eric Tullis
