Franz Nicolay

When: Tue., May 1, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $7

Until two years ago, Franz Nicolay was best known as the robustly mustachioed keyboardist for bar-rock outfit The Hold Steady. Now, he's going it alone, the proud papa of two solo LPs with a third on the way. Hold Steady fans are by no means assured to dig the new stuff: Unlike Craig Finn's verbose rants, Nicolay's writing is mostly minimal, zeroing in on the inner thoughts of his characters and focusing more on passions than plot. Befitting his lyrical technique, Nicolay's arrangements are less grandiose, combining chamber-pop melody with folky twang and the occasional classic rock riff. —Jordan Lawrence
