Foxygen, Naked Gods

When: Sun., Feb. 24, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $10

In recent years, psychedelic garage rock has gotten a little dangerous. Take Thee Oh Sees, a San Francisco outfit with relentless bass lines, aggressively blown-out textures and a forceful live show. Such outfits, once relegated to the fringe, are increasingly the norm. Those intimidated by the onslaught of Thee Oh Sees and their peers might find solace in Foxygen. Though they operate within the same colorfully roughshod spectrum, they focus on more delicate elements of '60s psychedelia. Tender organ fills a la ""In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" complement propulsive riffs that push but never shove. Singer Sam France croons like Mick Jagger in his early days, edgy enough to breed charisma while nimbly avoiding anything scary. There are moments when the band gets a bit abrasive, most often when France cries out through effects, creating a distorted yelp, but such instances are few and far between. Boone's Naked Gods open with a barrage of tangled indie rock riffs that should pair nicely with Foxygen's comfortable fuzz. —Jordan Lawrence
