For the Benefit of All Beings

When: Fri., April 6, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $10-$100

Amid the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution, a 22-year-old Tibetan Lama named Garchen Rinpoche was imprisoned in a labor camp by the Chinese government. There he stayed for the next 20 years, studying and practicing in secret with his guru, Khenpo Munsel. Upon his release in 1979, Rinpoche dedicated his life to carrying a message of limitless compassion around the world, becoming one of today's most beloved Buddhist teachers in the process. The documentary For the Benefit of All Beings tells the story of his life and teachings through the lens of Christina Lundberg, an experienced Buddhist filmmaker and longtime student of Rinpoche who was given unprecedented access to her teacher's public and private life for three years. This special screening is a fundraiser for the Garchen Institute in Arizona. Following the film, Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, whose "Sacred Arts Tour" visits Chapel Hill and Carrboro in June, offer a short prayer. The event begins at 7 p.m.; tickets are available on a sliding scale from $10–$100. —Brian Howe
