Folklords, The Empty Sound

When: Wed., Aug. 12, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5-$10
Bassist, improviser and composer Jason Ajemian has gathered exploratory jazz bona fides in recent years, thanks to work with Rob Mazurek, Marc Ribot and Matana Roberts. Last year’s Folklords, released to celebrate Sun Ra’s centenary, lands as another feat for the upstart. Offering visionary takes on Mingus, Monk and Sun Ra, Ajemian and an excellent supporting trio push from those cores into flights of open-ended fancy, loosing structure to slide into psychedelic heights. —Grayson Haver Currin
