Florence & the Machine, The Maccabees

When: Fri., Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $40-62

It's fitting that Florence + the Machine were catapulted in large part by media attention toward arenas and amphitheaters. Led by the soul-folk maneuvers of singer Florence Welch, the Machine is hooky and peppy enough to find notice in the mainstream, but their almost phantasmagorical mix of styles and instruments—harps and guitars, electronics and handclaps—push Welch's belted tunes toward the "future of pop" claims that critics find so magnetizing. And it's not without reason: Ceremonials, the band's second LP, is a refined and far-reaching affair, anchored with huge refrains but outfitted with surprising intricacy and subtlety. Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. show run $40–$62. The Maccabees open. —Grayson Currin
