Flash Gordon and Peggy Sue Got Married

When: Fri., July 27, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $8

Y'all sing it with me now: FLASH! AAAHH-AAHHHH! HE'LL SAVE EVERY ONE OF US! Those who caught Sam J. Jones' extended cameo in the recent hit Ted can see what the characters were talking about when the last surviving North American 35 mm print of 1980's Flash Gordon screens at Retrofantasma tonight. Campy as hell and twice as insane, it's a magnificent stew of overwrought production design, under-wrought acting, ridiculous effects and set pieces, and oh yeah, the Queen soundtrack, which alone is worth the price of admission.

Flash is paired with 1986's Peggy Sue Got Married, a change of pace for director Francis Ford Coppola that sends Kathleen Turner back to her teenage years, where she must try to avoid her previous mistakes with her future ex-husband (Nicolas Cage, whom it's easy to forget is Coppola's nephew). A bevy of future stars, including Helen Hunt and Jim Carrey, round out the supporting cast for this charming, nostalgic romp. —Zack Smith
