First Friday Raleigh

When: Fri., July 5, 6-9 p.m. 2013

As temperatures begin to bake the Triangle, the visual arts pace slows a bit—which provides an opportunity to take in some holdover exhibitions that you might not have gotten to yet.

At Flanders Gallery, Shaun Richards' Standard Deviation runs until July 18. Richards' canvases offer collisions of text and image that scan as a scatterplot of vague—but big—social message.

Reflecting its longstanding interest in Haitian painting, Gallery C shows brilliant, earthy work by contemporaries in the island nation.

CAM Raleigh is full of photography right now: Melanie Schiff's subtle, deadpan work is showing in the main gallery, and the work of seven emerging photographers from Wilson resident Allen Thomas Jr.'s collection is on display in the downstairs gallery.

Designbox has photography of a different sort. Mary Shannon Johnstone's Landfill Dogs is a project that benefits Wake County animals. Concerned about dogs facing euthanasia in animal shelters, Johnstone photographs them at the landfill, where their bodies will go if they're not adopted. It's a sincere, emotional show that might inspire you to bring a new member into your household before the weather turns cool again. —Chris Vitiello
