The Carolina Ballet kicks off its 2010–11 season with Artistic Director Robert Weiss' version of Igor Stravinsky's 1910 ballet interpreting the classic Russian folktale of the magic bird that is both a blessing and a curse to the prince who captures it. Featuring plenty of romance and mysticism, Weiss' Firebird has been called "compelling" and "touchingly charming" by the European dance magazine Balletanz. The production also features a new ballet from Company Principal Timour Bourtasenkov titled Walpurgisnacht ("Transfigured Night"). The production runs through Oct. 3.—Zack Smith
