Film:Acoustic: Network

When: Mon., April 13, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: $15

CAROLINA THEATRE—Patterson Hood likes to pull his songs from the headlines, preferably lurid ones, so his pairing with the toxically satiric 1976 film Network in the Film:Acoustic series, where musicians show and discuss movies that inspired them, makes perfect sense. It's also among Hood's five favorite films. "I first saw Network when I was 12 when it was in the theaters," he told me in an email, "and I have seen it over 20 times since. It just resonated with me. I love black comedy (the darker the better, and it doesn't get much darker than this). I love the screenwriting and the acting and understated direction ([Sidney] Lumet is one of my faves, too). I love how serious it is, yet so hilarious. I love how it predicted the future, as it points to reality TV, the effects of corporate takeover culture and Fox News. It is such a film of its time (the era I came of age in) and yet so timeless and such a film of today's culture and pop culture." 7 p.m., $15, 309 W. Morgan St., Durham, 919-560-3030, Klein
