In a Hasidic community in Tel Aviv, a family has just endured a tragedy: A young woman died on Purim, leaving behind her husband and infant son. The dead woman's 18-year-old sister must decide whether she'll step in and marry her brother-in-law, thus fulfilling the action of the title. The film's glimpses inside an extremely private, insular culture are rewarding, but writer-director Rama Burshtein takes too few risks in challenging the strictures and assumptions of her characters' world. Although Fill the Void carries some interest, a more compelling marriage tale set within an Israeli-Jewish subculture is Dover Koshashvili's 2001 tale, Late Marriage.
