Felicia Robinson: No Limits

When: Sat., Aug. 29 2015

Felicia Robinson's impressionistic paintings have a rich sense of color and an energetic roughness of gesture and form. Her first solo show, at age 60, is a tribute to her late mother. She inspired Robinson "to believe I can do anything I want to do." Mounting an exhibition is a big accomplishment for anyone, and Robinson had more hurdles to overcome than most. A self-taught artist with cerebral palsy, she paints by holding the brush between her teeth. Presented by the Carrack at SPECTRE Arts, with help from Arts Access, NO LIMITS (Aug. 27Sept. 13) includes all of Robinson's remaining paintings after losing some in a storage-shed fire last summer. This opening reception features readings of her poetry and the chance to meet the artist and learn more about her story. "My work puts the importance on what you can do rather than what you can't," she says in her artist's statement. "As I get older, it gets harder and harder for me to do the little I used to do for myself, but I keep pushing forward." 6–9 p.m., free, 1004 Morning Glory Ave., Durham, 919-213-1441, www.spectrearts.org. —Brian Howe
