Farmer/Veteran

When: Thu., Nov. 10, 7 p.m. 2016
Price: $11

Five years in the making, Durham-based Vittles Films' documentary about post-traumatic stress in rural North Carolina receives its hometown premiere at the Carolina Theatre after racking up awards at festivals from Brooklyn to Macon, Georgia. Co-directed by Alix Blair and Jeremy M. Lange (disclosure: Lange is a former INDY photographer, as is producer D.L. Anderson), Farmer/Veteran follows Alex Sutton as he tries to settle into a peaceful life of farming and family after three combat tours in Iraq. But as much as Sutton wants to focus on his new vocation and relationship, the traumas of war have powerful aftershocks, and they sometimes jar him out of consensus reality. The film is an intimate portrait of the external pressures and internal battles with prescriptions, ingrained impulses, and murky memories many soldiers face, too often alone, when they return from battle. If you miss this Veteran's Day screening, you might catch the film at the Cucalorus Film Festival in Wilmington the next day. If all else fails, Farmer/Veteran is slated to roll out nationally on PBS on Memorial Day next year. —Brian Howe
