Children from TABLE learn pickling at the Carrboro Farmers’ Market.

Farmer Foodshare provides fresh local food to food insecure community members, while building healthy community food systems and enhancing community economic development through job creation in food enterprises.

Like many mothers facing financial restraints, Mariana* remains poised around her children. Her 6-year-old daughter Daisy doesn’t realize that her parents struggle to put a fresh meal on the table every night. Mariana combats hunger quietly, stretching inexpensive ingredients to make meals that appeal to all six people at home while keeping them full. Mariana and her husband recently lost their jobs and had to turn to the food pantry at El Vinculo Hispano for help. Fresh vegetables and fruit became a luxury. Farmers market vegetables were out of the question. That was until El Vinculo, through its partnership with Farmer Foodshare, connected with neighboring farmers Judy Lessler and Laurie Heise from the Mid-Chatham CSA to provide fresh vegetables to the food pantry for 30 weeks. The farmers also notified their customers of the opportunity to donate weekly boxes when they were away. By the end of the season, there were three boxes per week going to El Vinculo Hispano. The farmers said, “Our CSA customers appreciated the opportunity to donate.” “We prefer fresh food. It’s just better,” says Mariana. Please support local farms and provide nutritious farm food to agencies like El Vinculo Hispano. You can buy a CSA for a family or earmark it for a pantry. It’s delicious. And everybody wins. Help Farmer Foodshare meet our $4,000 matching challenge in December.
