Family Film Festival

When: Wed., July 24, 1 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Despite a dearth of innovative family entertainment this summer—OK, we're mostly just embittered about heavily merchandised CGI sequels—there's still a number of delightful shorts playing at the NCMA's family film series every Wednesday. This one is a series of child's-POV shorts including adaptations of the wonderful Bink and Gollie books by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee, plus Nina Laden's Roberto the Insect Architect. And set some room on your calendar for the NCMA's July 31 screening of Gifts of the Night, a charming, visually lush animated anthology from French maestro Marcel Ocelot in which silhouetted characters act out a variety of international fairy tales against colorful computer-assisted backgrounds, like a picture book come to life. The series continues into August, with a spotlight on shorts created by N.C. State design students on Aug. 14. —Zack Smith
