Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright's Masterwork

When: Thu., Dec. 6, 7:30 p.m. 2012
Price: $9

With the closing of the Galaxy Cinema (pause here for a heavy sigh), Triangle Modernist Houses has moved its monthly Nowell's Architecture Movie Series to the Raleigh Grande. The first screening at the new venue is a film about the most famous Modernist house, Fallingwater: Frank Lloyd Wright's Masterwork. Built in the mid-1930s in western Pennsylvania, Fallingwater is a perfect entrée to unpack Wright's concept of organic architecture. Nestled into a forest landscape and poised matter-of-factly over a tumbling creek, the house makes deep connections to its site both through its design and in its materials. Through rare home movies and interviews, homeowner Edgar Kaufmann Jr. reflects upon his family's choice to build the house as well as what it was like to work with Wright. Design authorities also gush in voice-overs atop gorgeous views of this understated architectural icon. The 7:30 p.m. film is $9 at the door and free to Mod Squad members. —Chris Vitiello
