Ezra Furman & His Band, Tripp

When: Tue., Aug. 21, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $9

When it comes to Ezra Furman, most of the fun comes from picking out his disparate classic rock influences. His voice incorporates the whiskey-soaked rasp of Rod Stewart, but it's delivered with a high nasal twang that recalls Neil Young. The arrangements may draw heavily from indie rock's mainstream, taking a page out of The Arcade Fire's book with stomping rhythms placed behind broad soundscapes, but his songwriting reaches for the wry wit of forebears like Dylan and Cohen. Tripp, another classic rock-informed indie pop act, opens. The $9 bill starts at 9 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
