Experimental Music Study Group: Wandelweiser

When: Mon., March 16 2015

Given recent attacks on North Carolina's longstanding and proud higher-education institutions, it's reassuring to see organizations like the Experimental Music Study Group so active in—and interactive with—the community around it. Funded by a joint grant between UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke, EMSG pairs readings and discussions about frontiers in sounds with concerts that explore those same edges. For their first artist residency, they've recruited Denver pianist R. Andrew Lee and violinist Erik Carlson, a member of New York's brilliant International Contemporary Ensemble, for three concerts. With each bill, they will explore the music of European composer collective Wandelweiser, whose unifying feature is the impact of silence on the sounds of the compositions themselves. It's often delicate, curious music that widens your sense of hearing by actually limiting what it is you're hearing. Lee plays solo at Duke on Sunday and Carlson solo at a house concert in Raleigh on Tuesday, but the real treat should be their duo set Monday evening.
