Memphis’ Ex-Cult earned acclaim with early singles of taut, sharp post-punk. After two successful LPs expanding on those ideas, the band is going back to the shorter format and taking the opportunity to add new dimension. “Stick the Knife In” is a teaser for Ex-Cult’s forthcoming EP on In The Red Records. Layers of murky guitar tones and a slithering bass counter Ex-Cult’s more characteristically scratchy riffs. The vaguely goth mood carries the band into a more anxious, atmospheric realm. Davidians share the bill and a similarly expansive view. The Raleigh band’s hardcore foundations are a launching pad for dark melodies and a precise attack. —Bryan C. Reed
