Esperanza Spalding

When: Wed., May 9, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $42-$67

Having shown she can do the jazz thing and the chamber music thing, 2011 Best New Artist Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding is now out to show she can do the radio thing. Flirting with the jazz-pop niche once occupied by Steely Dan and Al Jarreau, Radio Music Society adds a horn section and singable grooves to Spalding's brainy, sleek sensibility. She went to Boston's Berklee College, but there's a lot of Portland, Ore., left in this native daughter of the City of Roses, including a song so-titled but extending also to such topics as Earth Day and Black History. Oh, and there are love songs, too. Tickets to the 8 p.m. show run $42–67.—Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
