Escapism Film Festival

When: Sept. 17-27 2012
Price: $6-$70
Life in the Triangle is like a nerd beer commercial in the fall, and the Carolina Theatre's Escapism Film Festival is a grand centerpiece of this. Spread out over two weeks, gloriously overlapping with the Escapist Expo video game convention and Neil Gaiman and Junot Díaz's respective visits to the area, it's a chance for the hardcore to descend into Requiem for a Dream levels of geekiness with a variety of fantastic films.

What's offered this time out? Several films are HD projections, but my film snobbery gravitates toward the 35mm prints, which include a rare print of the original 1982 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (no CGI and walkie-talkies up in here!), Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, Labyrinth, Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Back to the Future. (The other two BttF films are also there, though they're in HD, along with The Goonies, Big Trouble in Little China, Highlander: The Director's Cut and one of my favorites, Time After Time.) And there's a grand rarity, 1981's Dragonslayer, with one of the greatest screen dragons ever seen, the Vermithrax Pejorative!

According to the Carolina Theatre's Jim Carl, the most-buzzed-about print is 1987's Masters of the Universe, with Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor—apparently a highly pristine print for the many He-Man fans out there (trust me, they are legion). Yes, life is good in the Triangle. —Zack Smith
