Erykah Badu, Mali Music

When: Sat., Feb. 14, 8 p.m. 2015
Price: $67.50-$110

On a recent Facebook video, Erykah Badu and her two daughters offered their rendition of Colbie Caillat's self-worth anthem, "Try." Maybe it seemed surprising, watching the strange soul queen cover the fair Mailbu princess. But the song echoes the same unapologetic candor Badu delivered with "Me," from 2008's New Amerykah Part One (4th World War). "Had two babies, different dudes, and for them my love was true ..." she sang. "My ass and legs have gotten thick/It's all me." Whether working as a style icon, rebel, actress, sex symbol, soul goddess or healer, Badu serves as a muse against our own insecurities. To wit, there might not be a more romantic Valentine's Day date opportunity on the planet, but even Badu would agree that it's acceptable to show up stag, too. You don't have to try, you know? 8 p.m., $67.50$110.00, 123 Vivian St., Durham, 919-680-2787, —Eric Tullis
