Erin McKeown, Shirlette Ammons

When: Fri., Feb. 20, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $10
Even on the rough-and-strummy songs she recorded as a college student, Erin McKeown’s voice had either too much jazz-pop sparkle or blues-club smolder to feel like pure folk. The Massachusetts-based, Virginia-raised songwriter’s albums swing from re-arranged old standards to bossa nova grooves, perhaps passing through lite reggae on their way. Her latest, 2013’s Manifestra, dabbled in alt-rock and tropicalia. McKeown’s discography can be a bit too slick or cheeky, but at least it’s not predictable. —Jeff Klingman
