Eric Hirsh

When: Fri., May 17, 9 p.m. 2013
Price: $8-10
If anyone doubts the jazz chops of Durham's hip-hop fusion force The Beast, this performance should set them straight. The band's keyboardist, Eric Hirsh, is a powerful pianist, capable of delicate texture and bold melody. He's also the director of the Bull City's resident salsa titan, Orquesta GarDel. Hirsh will perform in a quartet setting with drummer Stephen Coffman and bassist Peter Kimosh, the other members of The Beast's instrumental core, plus saxophonist Aaron Hill. In The Beast, Hirsh and his cohorts back emcee Pierce Freelon, unlocking rhythmic muscle within smooth modern jazz. Paired instead with an instrumental mouthpiece, they should show off their melodic acumen, too. —Jordan Lawrence
