Who knew that being so passive could be so incredibly divisive? Sure, throughout Eric Clapton's five-decade career there have been moments of aggressive and italicized leads and solos. But ol' Slowhand, who turned 68 last week, has maintained his aging fanbase not only with his legacy but also with a long series of records that have done well simply to fit in, like a new and expensive pieces of furniture in the family room. For that reason, he's remained or become an idol to many—to sample, he's a three-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a commander of the Order of the British Empire. To others, though, he's anathema, the epitome of a musician who has settled lazily into his role as elder statesman of the formerly raw forms of the blues and rock 'n' roll.
