Encounters | Lump | Arts | Indy Week
This is a past event.

When: Sept. 4-26 2015

A Team Lump favorite returns: Dallas-based artist Ludwig Schwarz shows for the fourth time in the groundbreaking space's 20-year history. Schwarz is the perfect guiding spirit for Lump, a versatile sculptor whose mid-career retrospective was the highlight of last year's Dallas Biennial, and an eyebrow-raising abstract painter. He is also capable of crafting bizarre multimedia web shorts that could land him a late-night Comedy Central show if he wanted one. A life may not be complete until one hears Schwarz's mother wax poetic about Dallas Mavericks basketball great Dirk Nowitzki's similarity to the mythological hero Siegfried. So does that make Steve Nash Sieglinde? Tell us more, Mom.

Lump founder Bill Thelen credits Schwarz with substantial influence on the Raleigh scene. His pop sensibility hovers so perfectly between ecstasy and critique that its ambivalence makes you uneasy, which is Lump's wheelhouse. And Schwarz's casually abstract painting style, in which figure and ground delightfully give up on each other, resonates with area painters such as Ashlynn Browning. Schwarz doses the scene again with always-necessary fearlessness, taking over Lump with an installation through Sept. 26. 6–9 p.m., free, 505 S. Blount St., Raleigh, 919-889-2927, www.teamlump.org.Chris Vitiello
