After a series of singles, New York’s Lorely Rodriguez properly arrived with Me in early September, under the aegis of powerful indie XL Recordings. It is one of the year’s best and most appropriate pop moments, mining a sense of dance-floor ecstasy not so far removed from the radio but pairing it with candid and complex emotions that chart-toppers tend to couch in euphemism or equivocation. The songs are as irrepressible as they are accessible, able to pull you in on first listen and keep you there. Part of the staying power stems from Rodriguez’s ability to fit hard questions and demands into easy-to-love songs. —Grayson Haver Currin
