Empress Hotel

When: Wed., March 2, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

Thanks to their delightfully diverse self-titled debut EP, due from Park the Van in March, it's hard to typecast New Orleans quartet Empress Hotel. Like labelmates Dr. Dog and Floating Action, they nod toward hazy nostalgia, harmonizing over the cuddly keyboards of "Bells Ring" like Merseybeat adherents. But the track that takes the band's name is a dance wash with a hook that, though understated, seems destined for top-down radio play, with a bridge that begs for an arena-sized light show. There's a hint of soul swagger and sadness, shimmering Flaming Lips psychedelics and Vampire Weekend's inclusivity. A band of two brothers and close friends, Empress Hotel might be the sort of act you'll soon wish you would've seen at Slim's. —Grayson Currin
