Emmitt-Nershi Band

When: Wed., April 28, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $12-15

A bluegrass quartet with jam roots, the Emmitt-Nershi Band plays fast and surprisingly smooth newgrass. Mandolin man Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon and guitarist Bill Nershi of String Cheese Incident lead the proceedings, with suntanned vocals interrupting and taming fierce solos. The songs are long, sure, but structure and restraint act like a dam, holding back floodwaters, affording tunes direction and excitement. Tyler Grant, 2008 National Flatpicking Champion, supports the group on bass, and Andy Thorn plays banjo. The show is a homecoming of sorts for Thorn, a former Tar Heel and banjoist for Big Fat Gap. —Andrew Ritchey
