Emerson String Quartet

When: Sat., Oct. 20, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $30

The Emerson String Quartet's annual visit features a diverse program and a bittersweet farewell. This will be the last local concert for cellist David Finkel, whose departure next year from the Emerson marks their first personnel change in 33 years. The ensemble sees Finkel off with Mozart's mannered Hoffmeister quartet, a moody late piece by Shostakovich and bright sections of a Copland quartet. The program also includes "The Four Quarters," a recent commission from British composer Thomas Adés, the last movement of which weaves patterned lines in 25/16 time. —Chris Vitiello
