Imagine Portishead’s banjo album, or DJ Shadow cutting up the Fargo soundtrack. Portland’s Emancipator is a common fixture on recent electronic festival lineups, likely as the comedown act for big-tent EDM. The band’s melancholic down-tempo hearkens more to Clint Mansell arrangements and cosmopolitan trip-hop, always with a brooding mandolin or sax sample out front. This heady sound gets valuable live accompaniment from violinist Ilya Goldberg and others—hence the ensemble tag. Also in tow is French trip-hop producer Wax Tailor, who does a Geoff Barrow impression, as well as Ninja Tune shoegazer-in-disguise Yppah, who shrouds his delicate guitar stuff in fog. —David Ford Smith
