COMMONWEALTH ENDEAVORS: ELEVATOR/CONTRACTIONS

THURSDAY, FEB. 19–saturday, MARCH 7, DURHAM

COMMON GROUND THEATRE—Big trouble can brew in small spaces, as this double bill of short plays produced by Commonwealth Endeavors attests. In New Zealand native Jess Sayer's Elevator, a mother, her daughter and the daughter's friend are stuck in a broken-down ... well, you can guess. Each woman has a secret, and you can bet they'll all come out once the small talk is exhausted. In U.K. playwright Mike Bartlett's black comedy Contractions, the claustrophobic cosmology moves to an office, where a manager grills an employee about her undisclosed office romance, the inquiry growing steadily more invasive. It sounds like a cross between the nosy-boss comedy of The Office and the allegorical bureaucratic nightmares of Kafka, with a dash of the job-insecurity anxiety that is understandably in the air these days (see the Dardenne brothers' new film Two Days, One Night). Gregor McElvogue directs J Evarts, Mary Guthrie, Amanda Hahn, Susannah Hough and Laurel Ullman in these talky microcosms of power. 8 p.m. Thurs.–Sat.; 3 p.m. Sun., $10–$15, 4815B Hillsborough Rd., Durham, 919-384-7817, www.cgtheatre.com. —Brian Howe
