Elaine Orr

When: Tue., April 9, 7:30 p.m. 2013

N.C. State University professor Elaine Orr takes her childhood growing up in Africa, previously chronicled in her memoir Gods of the Noonday Sun, to a fictional place in her debut novel A Different Sun: A Novel of Africa. Orr's novel chronicles the story of Emma Bowman, married to a man 20 years her senior, whose gift of a simple writing box helps give her the strength to survive in a life that seems to bring new tragedy and heartbreak each day. The work already has earned acclaim from such authors as Lee Smith, who will introduce Orr at Quail Ridge Books. Orr also appears at Durham's Regulator Bookshop on April 18 and at Chapel Hill's Flyleaf Books on April 20. —Zack Smith
