EFECTOS SECUNDARIOS CULTURALES: CULTURAL SIDE EFFECTS

THURSDAY, SEPT. 17, RALEIGH

WEEMS GALLERY AT MEREDITH COLLEGE—It's a tricky business to at once express and critique one's cultural traditions, particularly when those traditions are stereotyped and marginalized as "minority." Artists José Manuel Cruz, Rafael Osuba and Mariana Rodriguez-Pardy (from Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico-Colombia and Mexico, respectively) show work that demonstrates this difficult reflection in Efectos Secundarios Culturales: Cultural Side Effects at the Meredith College Art Department's Frankie G. Weems Gallery. In his kinetic paintings, Cruz attempts to rid childhood stories and memories of all vestiges of stereotype. Osuba also animates narratives blending African and indigenous Puerto Rican traditions through music, dance and food. Rodriguez-Pardy's ceramic work uses the Mexican folk tradition of the Tree of Life as a departure point into sculptural installations. This opening reception features breakdancing, storytelling and Puerto Rican percussion, and the exhibit runs through Oct. 9. 5 p.m., free, 3800 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, 919-760-8600, www.meredith.edu.Chris Vitiello
