Earth Wind & Fire

When: Thu., Oct. 9, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: $27.50-$85
In a recent NPR piece extolling the virtues of Earth Wind and Fire’s “September,” a songwriter recruited by Maurice White, the band’s leader and visionary, remembers questioning the future hit song’s operative phrase: “We are going to change ‘ba-dee-ya’ to real words, right?” she asked. We all know how that went. White and his supremely talented cohorts in EWF knew that a ba-dee-ya, a lusciously drawn-out “yow” or a rafter-clearing high note by Philip Bailey made actual words superfluous. In its heyday, the nine-man EWF rivaled ELP for elaborate stage shows, with Vegas-style costumes, 360-degree drummers and Egyptology motifs. Things are a bit relaxed now visually, even if these grooves don’t seem to age. —David Klein
