Re: “U.S. law sends some bi-national, same-sex couples into exile

Wolf's article captures perfectly what same-sex bi-national couples endure. To ensure the integrity and security of my new family I had to sell my house in Chapel Hill and move to the Netherlands earlier this year. We wanted to avoid the life of uncertainty and second-class citizenship that the Fetters/Fagan family endured. It is true that many do not seem to grasp the stakes or the injustice of it. Here in the Netherlands our marriage will protect us from deportation. Yet it won't protect me from my homesickness. Everyday I miss friends in the Triangle, the Blue Ridge, the beach, and my family in Brevard and Hickory. I cannot care for my elderly relatives the way I was raised to do or witness my god child's developmental milestones. The Uniting American Families Act would protect families like mine who are just trying to get a fair deal at home.
