The Dutchman is an adaptation of Amiri Baraka's play in which "A sinister, neurotic white girl Lula, lures to his doom a good-looking young black man Clay", all within the claustrophobic confines of a sweaty subway car. Then Buñuel's absurdist short Simon of the Desert, loosely based on the story of the ascetic 5th-century Syrian saint Simeon Stylites, who lived for 39 years on top of a column.
