Many people in Durham like to emphasize how its dwellers pronounce the city's name by pushing the word into a single syllable—"Durm." When the Durham-based "Southern lifestyle brand" Runaway Clothing recently started selling snapback hats embroidered with "DURM," they capitalized on a hip-hop community eager to represent its home turf in style. This week, several of these Bull City artists combine their talents for what's being billed as a "Hip Hop Summit." But this isn't one of those frustratingly circular rap-panel discussions; rather, it's a celebration of hip-hop's five art forms, including emceeing, deejaying, graffiti, break dancing and beatboxing. Tonight, they're all reinforced by distinctly explosive performances by Durham's rap vanguard. Fresh off winning a Carolina Music Award for his "International Laww" video, all-purpose hip-hop talent The Real Laww meets fellow DURM artists J. Gunn, Toon, The Beast, Defacto Thezpian and Sarah Kaboom, with some out-of-town help from Raleigh emcee Lazurus. —Eric Tullis
