Durham Storefront Project

When: April 12-May 18 2012

Facebook's recent pricey acquisition of Instagram further muddies the already opaque waters of photography and ownership. However, media artist Parasol B offers an alternative for anyone with a smartphone to participate in. Start by scanning a painting of a QR code at Scratch Bakery. This reveals a map of sites around downtown Durham to go to, take a photograph according to certain instructions, and submit to a central website through another QR code. It all adds up to a virtual community art project online.

The piece is part of the second iteration of the Durham Storefront Project, which connects artists with underutilized and unconventional installation spaces in Downtown Durham storefronts. Greensboro's Elsewhere collective and Whitney Trettien enhance the Teermark Building on Main Street, Marc Russo's Bringing Nature In inhabits Through This Lens gallery, and Jessye McDowell's Static Live fills the Center Studio Architecture window. Other Triangle-area artists taking part include Justin Cook, Gabrielle Duggan, Julia Gartrell, Julienne Alexander, the Triangle Performing Arts Network and the Sacrificial Poets. Locations range from Five Points to Parrish Street; works are on display through May 18, with performances during Art Walk April 28–29. —Chris Vitiello
