Durham Hip-Hop Summit: Producer battle & other performances including a DJ spin-off

When: Sat., Aug. 17, 8 p.m. 2013
Price: $20 all day pass for 3 venues

In its second year, the DURM Hip Hop Summit has expanded to three venues, added three local celebrity hosts and tripled its number of sponsors and acts. One of the hosts is Nikki Nikole, who until recently worked as an on-air radio personality at WQOK-FM, the Triangle's commercial hip-hop and R&B station."I was in a box," she says of her May departure. "And I felt like I wasn't growing inside of that box. I wanted to expand and explore." Before she quit and took what she calls a leap of faith, she produced and co-hosted "919 Radio," a short-lived weekly show that showcased some of the local hip-hop artists previously ignored by the station's programming.

Now she's lending her industry savvy to a Triangle rap scene that's attempting to reinvent itself. In Durham, hip-hop seems to be in great shape, with hip-hop hobbyists Toon & the Real Laww at the helm. Kaze, Kooley High, Young Swift, Actual Proof and more join for a festival spread across the Bull City's top live music venues. —Eric Tullis
