Most Triangle residents won't make it out to this month's Comic-Con International: San Diego—and those who do might not get to meet a lot of the people they want to meet. (Seriously, those lines are like death marches.) Nor will most be able to afford all the autographs they want at the new Raleigh Supercon, debuting at the Raleigh Convention Center the weekend of July 14. But at the Durham County Southwest Regional Library this week, there's a free, family-friendly alternative. The main Durham Comics Fest is on Saturday, with creators offering workshops on their specialties and a local artists' alley. The featured guests include Liz Prince, who has drawn Steven Universe and Adventure Time stories; R. Sikoryak, the hilarious comics "remixer" who once turned the iTunes user agreement into a graphic novel; and Kristy Guevara-Flanagan, whose documentary Wonder Women! The Untold History of the American Superheroine screens at the library on Sunday. There are also offsite events such as a trivia night at Fullsteam Brewery (Thursday, July 6), a "Drink and Draw" at the Geer Street Cocoa Cinnamon (Friday, July 7), and a local creator-networking night at Atomic Empire (Wednesday, July 12). Apt for a library convention, it's less about buying than learning, but it's also a lot of fun. —Zack Smith
