Durham Cinematheque: Celebrate the Fifth

When: Fri., July 5, 9-11 p.m. 2013
Price: Free

Independence Day presents a weird conflict. You flop on your back on a blanket in the dark with a lovely adult beverage and watch chrysanthemums, dahlias and peonies erupt in the sky, which is nice. But then there's the war aspect—the spangled stars are sparks from the bombardment of Fort McHenry. Tom Whiteside knowingly winks and offers an alternative blanket-and-nightlight experience, celebrating the fifth season of his Durham Cinematheque. He'll project some of his greatest archival hits including the popular "Food for Paris Markets" from 1948, plus vintage television ads and an encore of the "Just Bugs" program with live accompaniment by Fontana. Bring your own blanket and refreshments, plus a donation to put in the hat when it's passed. —Chris Vitiello
