Dumpstaphunk, Atlas Road Crew

When: Sat., Aug. 12, 9 p.m. 2017
Price: $17

Keyboard player Ivan Neville has a pretty impressive pedigree. Not only does his family's musical legacy go back to The Meters and The Neville Brothers, Ivan himself has been a member of the latter. But Dumpstaphunk, which has been in business since 2003, is his real passion project. The New Orleans-based band combines thick, sweaty funk grooves with a rocking side (they've been known to cover Zeppelin) and a tendency toward hot and heavy jamming. Dumpstaphunk's sound has proven pliable enough to allow for collaborations with everyone from Flea to Ani DiFranco. And as the recent single "Justice" with guest Trombone Shorty makes clear, it's more than just a party band—the music has a message, too. There's always plenty of partying to be found whenever these Crescent City funkmeisters take the stage. —Jim Allen
