The vibrant host of NPR’s JazzSet, Dee Dee Bridgewater recently tracked her roots to Mali, where the red earth reminded her of her Tennessee birthplace. She has portrayed Billie Holiday, won a Tony for her role in The Wiz and earned three Grammys in a career spanning more than four decades. She accompanies the Duke University Jazz Ensemble, directed by John Brown. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
